Minglu Du (b. 1998, Guiyang, China) is a queer interdisciplinary artist based in Providence, USA, and Shanghai, China. She works across illustration, experimental animation, games, and installation, often integrating literature and soundtracks to create immersive, narrative-driven experiences. Her work frequently depicts human figures as metaphorical forms or surreal creatures, exploring societal inequalities through thick, twisted forms, sharp color contrasts, and metallic textures that evoke emotional responses. She focuses on marginalized, silenced, and traumatized communities, addressing themes of trauma, resilience, and identity.
Artist Statement
Du’s work blends surreal aesthetics with immersive storytelling, using animation, games, and graphic novels to invite viewers into her characters’ emotional experiences. Initially centered on collective narratives, she increasingly draws on her own life to connect with broader community experiences. Her art engages with themes of trauma, resilience, and empathy, reflecting the lived realities of marginalized and diasporic communities. Through metaphorical figures, bold contrasts, and metallic or reflective textures, she aims to create work that encourages reflection and understanding, allowing viewers to experience the fragility, vulnerability, and complexity of human relationships and social dynamics.
